Diatom Identification: A Double Challenge Called ADIAC
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper introduces the project ADIAC (Automatic Diatom Identiication and Classiication), which started in May 1998 and which is nanced by the European MAST (Marine Science and Technology) programme. The main goal is to develop algorithms for an automatic identiication of diatoms using image information: both valve shape (contour) and ornamentation. The paper presents the goals of the project as well as rst results on shape modeling and contour extraction. Public data are available in order to create student projects beyond the ADIAC partnership. For further information see 1 Introduction ADIAC is the acronym of the project Automatic Di-atom Identiication and Classiication. In phycological research the word identiication refers to what in pattern recognition is meant by classiication, whereas the phycological meaning of classiication is the establishment of the class-forming rules. In order to avoid a confusion, we will apply the phycological interpretation. Since this is the rst scientiic publication by most of the project's partners, and because our goal is to promote diatom identiication as a new and challenging area in pattern recognition, we start with explaining the history of the project, diatom research and the goals. Sections 2 to 4 present rst results on image databases, shape modeling and contour extraction.

متن کاملDiatom Autofocusing in Brightfield Microscopy: a Comparative Study
We present a number of autofocusing methods in lighting microscopy for its use in diatom identi cation. Among these, the Tenengrad method has been considered one of the best. The basic requirements for a practical autofocusing system are speed, sharpness and robustness to noise. Recently other focus measures based on a modi ed Laplacian method are said to perform better than Tenengrad. We inves...
متن کاملIdentification and Functional Analysis of Delta-9 Desaturase, a Key Enzyme in PUFA Synthesis, Isolated from the Oleaginous Diatom Fistulifera
Oleaginous microalgae are one of the promising resource of nonedible biodiesel fuel (BDF) feed stock alternatives. Now a challenge task is the decrease of the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) content affecting on the BDF oxidative stability by using gene manipulation techniques. However, only the limited knowledge has been available concerning the fatty acid and PUFA synthesis pat...
متن کاملAutomatic Identification of Diatoms with Circular Shape using Texture Analysis
Diatoms are unicellular microscopic algae found in practically any moist environment. Identification of diatom has application in many disciplines, including ecology, archaeology and forensic science. In recent years, the work has been undertaken for automatic identification of diatom. However, the diatom with circular shape has not yet been considered as the uttermost goal of the research. In ...
متن کاملIdentification of Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) during Ecological Assessments: Comparison between Light Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy Techniques
Identification of diatom frustules, a vital step during ecological analyses, is greatly influenced by the magnification at which samples are examined. The striking differences between Light Microscopy (LM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) reveal inconsistencies in the identification of diatoms at low magnifications. These inconsistencies hinder comparative analyses between data sets colle...
